Denial of access

Federal Conservative party denies access to Canada’s National Observer journalist

The federal Conservative Party denied accreditation to cover its annual convention to Arno Kopecky, a journalist with Canada’s National Observer.

In an interview with The North State, Kopecky said he had applied about a month before the convention, but heard nothing back from the party’s media department.

Kopecky went to the convention on opening day and spoke with the party’s director of communications, Sarah Fisher, who said she didn’t know why the publication hadn’t been approved.

Kopecky reported from outside the convention after being denied access.

In 2023, the Conservative Party denied access to its convention to another journalist from the National Observer, as well as journalists with Xtra, Pivot and a journalist reporting for both The Maple and The Real News Network.
