Twitter withholds Canada-based Sikh media after Indian government request

In response to a request from the Indian government, Twitter (currently called X) prevented users in India from viewing the account of Canadian media organization Baaz News, which covers the global Sikh and Punjabi diaspora. 

Baaz News noted the ban in a tweet on March 20, 2023, and later posted a screenshot of an email from Twitter which explained that the social media company had received a “legal removal demand” from the Indian government under the country’s Information Technology Act. 

The account remained unavailable to users in India as of November 2023.
