Jeremy Appel, a reporter with The Sprawl, was denied access to a July 7, 2021 news conference held by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Calgary.
Appel said on Twitter he was initially refused entry as security personnel at the event had never heard of the independent local news site. He then drove to his city hall office to get his press pass and returned to the site to show his accreditation.
Security said no more media were being allowed into the event and denied Appel access for a second time.
An official from the Prime Minister’s Office later called Jeremey Klaszus, The Sprawl’s editor-in-chief, to apologize.
